The new methodology of service-learning is, as in other cases, a new denomination of a practice that many teachers have already been applying in their classrooms. Personally, I took student volunteers from the university, from the area of technical English, to the Introduction to English Language class at the Senior University, where mutual enrichment class singapore took place, since the older ones enjoyed having young people in the classroom and the university students increased their self-esteem by seeing how they were able to teach English , even at a low level.
That is what ApS is about, learning to help and, for that, we can not leave the classroom , since it is not always easy to abandon it, neither for time, nor for resources or for practical possibilities, because we must not forget that in theory all projects It sounds very good, but something very different is how to put it into practice, the difficulties that arise and the actual results that are obtained.
Although the definition of this methodology is learning by helping in the community , we must not forget that schools are part of that community, environments in which there are already many differences, groups, distancing and ignorance. Therefore, although the ideal could be, without doubt, that the relationship with reality, which is intended as one of the objectives of this method, be with the community outside the center, we believe that an appropriate way to introduce it into the classroom It can be gradual and staggered .
Thus, in that sense, we must be able to show empathy, understand and help the one next to us, in our classroom , and then move on to the educational center and the community, both locally and nationally or internationally. Another objective of this learning is that students are aware of the implications of the results, it is a real and practical learning very motivating and with many people benefited .
Some proposals to learn by helping without leaving the center are the following:
Students who finish an activity first, help other classmates who have not finished, act as teachers ( teaching is learned ).
Students collaborate actively, taking turns or through another system, with students who have certain needs .
The students of higher courses will give talks about content to students of lower grades, support them with certain subjects, individually or jointly.
Experiences such as those in Hong Kong or Japan offer ideas such as taking care of school facilities among students , even cleaning or having an urban garden.
Experiences such as Templestowe College in Australia offer students the opportunity to be professors of subjects they master and take part in the choice of subjects. In addition, assistance in the community, participation in extracurricular activities and external work are considered as part of the qualification.
Campaigns for food, clothing, toys or plugs, for example.
Collaborations through the internet : with other centers, with other countries or NGOs. Being connected can also serve to discover the reality of distant communities and to help others, improving as people, aspects that should be intrinsic objectives in education.
We can not ignore more complex and complete experiences that involve the local community or certain exchanges, and that will always be more enriching than the limited performance in the center. But we want to offer some options since the resources or the possibilities of action are not always what we would like. We could say that we are making an adaptation of the ApS itself, remembering that teaching creativity makes a difference when the possibilities are limited . If the simultaneous objectives of awareness and help are achieved, a great qualitative step will have been taken in our teaching.
